For english speakers

This is an attempt to write a more complete pain definition, that acknowledges the multifactorial nature and complexity of the pain experience, and acknowledging the lessons learned and the knowledge we have gained from modern pain science.  A Science-Based pain definition.

Smertespecialisterne’s pain definition:

Pain is part of a complex and dynamic process, multiple factors are involved in the experience of pain. It can be modulated by emotional, mental, and sensory mechanism, and it interacts with both cognitive and autonomic processes.

Pain often correlates with tissue damage, but pain is not merely a product of a linear system. Pain can be conceptualized as a conscious experience of the nervous systems and minds perception that there is a threat, or potential threat to the body and/or tissue.

Pain is not a simple sensation, the ability to perceive pain has great survival value, and is critical for survival of the organism.
